The Middle East Consortium on Infectious Disease Surveillance (MECIDS), in collaboration with the European Programme for Intervention Epidemiology Training (EPIET), will conduct the first regional epidemiological training course for the Middle East in September 2004. This course represents a groundbreaking effort that will enhance the capacity of the public health sector, both on domestic and regional levels, and will also build a common epidemiological language and a strong network of health professionals throughout the region. While many of the collaborating countries have domestic field epidemiology training programs, this course is the first of its kind to bring together public health workers with different Middle Eastern nationalities. This course will also support a separate but related project designed by MECIDS to assess and respond to foodborne diseases in participating nations.Participants will include doctors, nurses, epidemiologists, and laboratory workers based at universities and Ministries of Health in Israel, Jordan, and Palestine. In addition to lectures and hands-on exercises designed to teach key principles of field epidemiology, the course will include workshops on interpersonal communication and ways to address the challenges of working across conflict lines.
